Introduction & Awareness:
The cross-industry policy has been developed in response to concerns from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) about the operational limits of Search and Rescue winching systems, which are designed to safely lift individuals weighing up to 124kg.
The policy aims to enhance safety across emergency evacuations, lifeboat loading, stretcher and helicopter rescues, and confined space entries or rescue. It follows a detailed two-and-a-half-year review by industry experts, supported by engagement with HM Coastguard and offshore operators.
OEUK published the policy on 1st November 2025 to allow employers to prepare, communicate with their teams, and provide wellbeing support ahead of implementation.
